The back has two slots so that you can hang it on the wall on screws if you desire. It is hollow and has one side open so that you can display items or photos inside of it. In this photo it is holding a piece of flooring from the SS United States, which is not included. 
 
William Francis Gibbs, the ship's architect, mandated that the slots in the fasteners holding the windowpanes in the portholes must be installed so that they are running parallel to the curvature of the windows. It is this attention to detail that made the ship so beautiful and unique.
