This is a painting of a scuffed lower portion of the hull on the SS United States. The strange shape at the bottom is a simplification of a large protective bumper sometimes called a camel. I love the way the two seemingly abstract portions frame the water. The hull is painted with thick layers of oil paint, scratched through and repainted repeatedly to develop a complex patina in the way that a ship is weathered over time.
