“Unreliable Reflection” is a memoryscape combining the frame of a shattered window near my old studio in Fishtown with reflections from different parts of Lake Belle Taine, MN. I grew up in Minnesota surrounded by rivers and lakes, and over the years I keep returning to my origins for inspiration, bringing them to my studio in Philadelphia.
I am always strongly influenced by my surroundings, and I take lots of photos as notes. The window frame was near my 2011 studio in pre-gentrified Fishtown. Living and working in an area scattered with derelict brick buildings and empty lots inspired my series of paintings that included pigments made from those bricks. This painting was made a couple years after I left that studio, based on a collage I made from photographs.
