This is a painting of the bow of the Moshulu. I painted the first layers in iron oxide pigments, then painted on several layers of colorful paint, which I scratched away to reveal the underlying rust. It happens to the best of us: even the most beautiful and the most powerful deteriorate with age. It is a different kind of beauty. 
 
The ship has been repainted since then and is a more subdued navy with a much smaller red waterline that is level rather than following the curve of the strakes. I liked it better before.
