Oil on panel

18" x 24" x 3/4 in

2022

This is a painting of the cutwater of the Gazela, the foremost portion of the bow. The ship, built in 1901 in Portugal, is constructed of wood and the lower portion of the hull is protected by copper cladding. This provides protection from mechanical damage, as well as preventing the growth of marine life from destroying the wood. The way that the copper has been dented, scratched, crunched, and oxidized tells the story of the ship's voyages.
