Low-Stakes Book Club: "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" by Edgar Allan Poe
Arguably the first modern detective story, this Poe mystery was published in 1841, 46 years before the first Sherlock Holmes novel. The twist ending is something else.

About the event
I've found a couple of different iterations of the text of this story, which is bizarre since it shouldn't be translated from English to English. Here is the text that is consistent amongst various sources.
I'm glad that I went deeper in my research, since the first search result for the story is apparently an adaptation intended for use in high school English classes for foreign exchange students! If you're interested in comparing the two versions, here's the ESOL version.
Some of our book club members are ESOL teachers and students, so it might be interesting and helpful to have both versions, even if you only choose to read the original.
